当初、「40女はややこしい」というおしゃれな仮タイトルを編集長がつけてくれたんですが、取材していくうちに、40歳前後といっても団塊ジュニアとバブル世代で全く違うことがわかりました。バブル世代は、一般職で年収700万円とか、10歳年下の西島秀俊似の彼氏がいるとか、とにかく華やかで女子力が高い。それに比べて団塊ジュニアは、同僚の前でも堂々と「彼氏は10年いない」と非モテ自慢をしたり、婚活しているのに「一人暮らしが楽しい」と矛盾したことを言ったり、地味。そして彼女たちはバブル世代の話題になると、「やつらは汚い」と憎しみを露にする。その感情がおもしろいなと思ったんです。
